Photoshop: Use Adjustment Layers for Non-Destructive Editing

🎨 Edit Colors Without Destroying Pixels

Direct color changes are permanent. Adjustment Layers are non-destructive. Toggle on/off, change settings anytime.

📝 Common Adjustment Layers

Levels:
- Adjust shadows, midtones, highlights
- Fix underexposed images

Curves:
- Precise tonal control
- Professional color grading

Hue/Saturation:
- Change color cast
- Boost vibrance
- Recolor specific ranges

Brightness/Contrast:
- Simple brightness and contrast

Color Balance:
- Adjust color casts (warm/cool)

Black & White:
- Convert to black and white
- Control channel contribution

Photo Filter:
- Apply warming/cooling filter

🎯 Layer Mask Integration

- Add Adjustment Layer
- Click mask thumbnail
- Paint with black → hide effect
- Paint with white → reveal effect

Selective adjustments:
1. Add Levels adjustment layer
2. Click mask
3. Paint black on areas you don't want affected
4. Paint white on areas you do want affected

Gradual effects:
1. Click mask thumbnail
2. Apply gradient (black to white)
3. Effect fades in gradually

Clip to layer below:
- Alt-click between adjustment layer and target layer
- Adjustment only affects that layer

  • Multiple adjustment layers for complex edits
  • Save adjustment presets for reuse
  • Use with layer groups for organization
  • Toggle layer visibility to see before/after
