WordPress: Use Query Monitor to Debug Performance Issues

- 24.06.26 - ErcanOPAK

🐞 Debug Slow Queries and Performance

Site slow? Query Monitor shows database queries, hooks, memory usage, page speed. Essential debugging plugin.

📝 What Query Monitor Shows

Install: Plugins → Add New → Query Monitor

Dashboard shows:
- Database Queries (count + time)
- Page Generation Time
- Memory Usage
- Hook execution
- HTTP API calls
- PHP errors and warnings

Database queries tab:
- Full SQL queries
- Query duration
- Which component (plugin/theme) called it
- Duplicate queries detection

Hooks tab:
- All action and filter hooks fired
- Execution time per hook
- Hooks called multiple times

> 100 queries = slow page
> 1 second DB time = slow page

🎯 Debugging Tips

- Identify slow queries (highlighted in red)
- Find duplicate queries (same query repeated)
- Check for N+1 queries (queries inside loops)
- Monitor hook performance
- Track plugin impact

Common optimizations:
1. Cache frequent queries (transients)
2. Add indexes for slow queries
3. Remove unnecessary plugins
4. Optimize WP_Query parameters
5. Lazy load resources

💡 Pro Tips

  • Use only in development (disable in production)
  • Set user permissions for Query Monitor access
  • Use with caching plugin for comparison
  • Monitor third-party API calls

“Query Monitor found 50 duplicate queries on homepage. Fixed them, page load dropped from 4s to 1s. Essential debugging tool.”
