Visual Studio: Use Live Share for Real-Time Collaboration

- 18.07.26 - ErcanOPAK

🤝 Live Share = Real-Time Collaboration

Screen sharing is passive. Live Share is active collaboration. Multiple devs edit, debug, and navigate code together — in real-time.

⌨️ Getting Started

# Install Live Share
- Visual Studio → Extensions → Manage Extensions
- Search: "Live Share"
- Download and install

# OR for VS Code
- Extensions (Ctrl+Shift+X)
- Search: "Live Share"
- Install

# Start a session
- Click Live Share button (top right)
- Or: View → Other Windows → Live Share
- Click "Start collaboration session"

# Share link
- Copy the invitation link
- Share with teammates

# Join a session
- Click invitation link
- Or: Live Share → Join session
- Enter session URL

🎯 Live Share Features

# Collaboration Features
- Co-editing (multiple cursors)
- Shared debugging (breakpoints, watches)
- Shared terminal
- Shared local servers
- Voice calling (built-in)
- Follow mode (guide participants)
- Focus mode (share specific files)

# Guest Capabilities
- Edit code (with host permission)
- Debug with host's environment
- View shared servers
- Use shared terminal
- See host's code navigation

# Security
- Guest has no access to:
  - Your PC files (only shared code)
  - Your git commands
  - Your environment variables
  - Your external services
- Host controls permissions
- Can lock/unlock editing

âś… Pro Tips

  • Use for code reviews (much more interactive)
  • Perfect for onboarding new devs
  • Debug production issues together
  • Use follow mode for teaching
  • Shared terminal = pair debugging

“Live Share revolutionizes collaboration. Real-time editing, debugging, and pairing. Essential for remote teams.”

— Remote Developer
