🖌️ Your Photoshop Action Keeps Stopping Partway Through a Batch Run
An Action recorded to process one image runs perfectly by itself, but hooked up to File → Automate → Batch across a whole folder, it stalls partway through every single time – almost always because a step inside the Action opens a DIALOG BOX (a Save As prompt, a format options dialog, a resize confirmation) that requires a person to click something, and Batch mode has no one there to click it.
🔎 The Problem
An Action recorded with a manual "Save As" step (rather than a scripted export) pauses at that exact step during every batch run, waiting for a dialog box click that will never come unless someone is sitting at the keyboard - which defeats the entire purpose of batch processing a folder unattended.
✅ Fix 1: Use Batch’s Own Save/Destination Options Instead of a Recorded Save Step
- In the Batch dialog itself, set “Destination” to “Folder” and configure the file naming/format there, rather than recording a manual “Save As” click inside the Action – this lets Batch handle saving programmatically for every file, with no dialog to get stuck on.
- If the Action absolutely must include a Save step (some workflows need it for other reasons), re-record that specific step using “Save As” with “Save” set as an explicit menu action rather than relying on whatever dialog last appeared when you originally recorded it.
⚠️ Fix 2: Check the Batch Dialog’s Own Override Options
- The Batch dialog has an “Override Action ‘Save As’ Commands” checkbox specifically for this situation – enabling it redirects any Save As step inside the Action to the Destination folder you configured, instead of letting the Action’s own recorded dialog take over.
- “Suppress File Open Options Dialogs” and “Suppress Color Profile Warnings” (also in the Batch dialog) catch two other common dialog-box stalls – format-specific option prompts and color profile mismatch warnings – that can independently cause the exact same partway-through freeze.
🚨 If the Action Was Recorded With Manual Adjustments Mid-Way
- Any step that requires visual judgment (manually dragging a crop handle, eyeballing a color adjustment) can’t be meaningfully automated at all – Batch can only play back exact recorded values, so an Action with a genuinely manual step needs that step re-recorded with fixed, repeatable values before batch processing makes sense.
A batch run doesn’t hang because Photoshop is stuck – it hangs because something in the Action is still waiting for a person, and Batch mode never brought one.
