Photoshop: Fix Blurry Text After Transform with This One Setting

- 03.02.26 - ErcanOPAK

Scaled or rotated text looks blurry and pixelated? Photoshop’s transform interpolation is set wrong. One checkbox fixes it permanently.

The Blurry Text Problem:

1. Create text layer
2. Ctrl+T to transform
3. Scale up 200%
4. Text looks jagged and blurry

Why? Photoshop is treating vector text like pixels!

The Permanent Fix:

Edit → Preferences → General

✅ Enable: “Use Legacy Free Transform”

Now text stays sharp at any size!

Why This Happens:

Modern Photoshop uses “content-aware” scaling by default. Great for photos, terrible for text. It analyzes pixels and tries to be smart, but text is VECTOR data – it should just scale the vector, not interpolate pixels.

// Modern Transform (Default):
Text → Rasterize to pixels → Interpolate → Blurry mess

// Legacy Transform:
Text → Scale vector path → Render → Crisp text

Alternative: Convert to Shape

Right-click text layer → Convert to Shape

Now it’s a vector shape, always sharp. But you lose text editability!

Best Practice: Smart Objects

For ultimate quality:

1. Right-click layer → Convert to Smart Object
2. Now you can transform infinitely without quality loss
3. Double-click to edit original text anytime

Smart Object Benefits:

Regular Layer:
Scale 50% → 200% → 50% = Quality degrades each time

Smart Object:
Scale 50% → 200% → 50% = Perfect quality (stores original)

Keyboard Shortcut for Quick Smart Object:

Select layer → Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E → Creates merged smart object
Or: Filter → Convert for Smart Filters (makes it smart object)

Real Example – Logo Design:

Client: “Make logo bigger”
You: Scale 300%
Client: “Actually, smaller”
You: Scale 30%
Client: “Bigger again”

Without Smart Object: Logo is mush after 3 changes
With Smart Object: Logo stays crisp

Bonus: Interpolation Methods

When scaling regular layers, interpolation method matters:

Edit → Preferences → Image Interpolation

Bicubic Sharper: Best for reducing images
Bicubic Smoother: Best for enlarging images
Nearest Neighbor: Pixel art (no smoothing)
Preserve Details 2.0: AI upscaling (best quality, slower)

For text specifically: Use Legacy Free Transform or Smart Objects, ignore interpolation settings.
